The Movie:

Danny (28 Days Later) Boyle’s Trainspotting, adapted from the novel of the same name by Irvine Welsh, is a fast paced trip through the seedy side of heroin addiction. Set in Edinburgh, Scotland, the film focuses on Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor of Star Wars – Episode 1) who starts on heroin after becoming disenfranchised with his life and the world around him.

He takes to the smack like a fish to water, and soon enough finds that he’d better clean up if he wants to stick around. He makes an effort to get clean after his habit starts to affect his relationships with his family and his friends.

That’s the plot in a nutshell. At its core it’s a rather simple story but that doesn’t make it any less effective. What makes the film work so well is primarily the cast of characters and the actors who portray them. McGregor is perfectly cast in the lead and even at his lowest makes for a likeable junkie. He surrounds himself with the likes of Sick Boy (Johnny Lee Miller), Spud (Ewen Bremner), Tommy (Kevin McKidd), and Begbie (Robert Carlye). Their camaraderie is what carries the film and when you dig a little deeper it’s as much about friendship and relationships as it is about shooting up and listening to Iggy Pop.

The story twists and turns around the group of friends, focusing in and our of their lives as they struggle with their problems. This makes way for plenty of opportunity for John Hodge’s script to parlay Irvine Welsh’s sublime sense of black humor into the film. There are plenty of now famous moments here that hold up wonderfully and are just as funny now as they were when the film was released. Spud’s interview is the comedic highlight of the film, Renton’s toilet diving a close second (and a scene that borders on the surreal).

Perhaps most interesting is Renton’s relationship with Diane (Kelly McDonald), a pretty girl who looks much more mature then her actual fourteen years. The two seem to have a sort of bizarre chemistry that, even though their relationship is damned from the start, makes them care about each other regardless.

Boyle keeps the film moving at a rapid pace thanks to plenty of amusing pop culture references that help us get to know the characters and their interests, as well as some killer camera work and a great soundtrack made up of instantly recognizable tracks like Iggy Pop’s Lust For Life and more obscure numbers like Mile End by Brit Pop favorites, Pulp. Plenty of Sean Connery and James Bond references make for some amusing dialogue, particularly between Renton and Sick Boy (who idolizes Connery).

The film is not all laughs though. There are a few very intense and disturbing moments that ensure that the filmmakers are not at all glamorizing the lifestyle that the characters live. The baby on the ceiling scene still unnerves me every time I see it and no one in their right mind could possibly think that the withdrawal scenes look like any fun at all.

Ultimately, despite being obviously made in the mid nineties (making it a prime candidate for looking dated and old hat), Trainspotting still holds up as a uniquely memorable film filled with personable and believably screwed up characters, a great soundtrack, slick visuals, and a sense of manic energy rarely captured on film.

This new Definitive Edition from Miramax presents the film in its uncut international version.

The DVD

Video:

Trainspotting gets an excellent 1.85.1 anamorphic widescreen transfer that really brings the movie to life for home theater viewing. The colors are reproduced almost perfectly and skin tones are dead on. Black levels remain consistently deep and don’t break up and compression artifacts are virtually non-existent. There is some very mild edge enhancement that you’ll only notice if you’re really looking for it and even then only in a few scenes. There is also some shimmering in a couple of spots. But aside from those two minor details and the slightest hint of print damage cropping up as the occasional tiny speck, this transfer looks great.

Sound:

Miramax has supplied sound mixes in Dolby Digital 5.1 and DTS 5.1 in English, as well as a French 5.1 mix. All three tracks sound very nice, with some solid and distinct channel separation. The DTS track gets a slight edge over the 5.1 as it has a bit more kick to it but both tracks are very lively with plenty of use from the surrounds. The club scene in particular is a great example, with the music pumping out from the surrounds and the sub while the dialogue remains clear and trouble-free. With the soundtrack playing such a very important role in the film, it’s great to have such a clean and life like mix to further immerse you into the movie. Optional English subtitles are included.

Extras:

This two disc set has a wealth of extra features (it appears that they’ve ported them over from the recent UK release), most of which are on the second disc, but are spread out accordingly:

Disc 1

First up is an interesting commentary track from director Danny Boyle, star Ewan McGregor, producer Andrew McDonald, and screenwriter John Hodge. McGregor starts the commentary off explaining that it has been pieced together from various interviews conducted with the participants back in 1996. It’s edited together quite nicely however, and there are a lot of interesting tidbits contained within. Boyle and McGregor both have some nice anecdotes about the films infamous toilet diving scene, and hearing Hodge discuss alcoholism versus heroin addiction lends a unique perspective to the proceedings. Hodge also discusses some of the difficulties in adapting the book for the big screen and McDonald is on hand to offer his stories about bringing the whole thing together and some of the difficulties he faced in doing that.

The first disc is also where the nine deleted scenes are housed, each scene available with optional commentary, and able to be played separately or in a montage. These deleted scenes are presented in non-anamorphic widescreen.

Deleted Scene #24 - A scene involving Renton reading a movie guide that was cut for pacing reasons.

Deleted Scene #31 - Spuds interview in a more complete form, edited because Boyle didn’t really think anyone would get it (a shame too, as it is a great scene!).

Deleted Scene #32 - Renton’s interview, cut because according to Boyle it went on too long and was actually too close to the narrative of the book..

Deleted Scene #73 & 110 - Renton, Spud and Sick Boy are caught red handed shoplifting in a record store by Diane, cut because the director felt that the scene was just poorly done.

Deleted Scene #142 - A moment between Renton and Swanney in the hospital after Swanney has lost his leg, cut because it was too similar to another scene with Tommy.

Deleted Scene #143 - Renton and Sick Boy are talking in a park, the scene shows a more cynical Sick Boy, changed by some of the darker events that occur in the film. This scene was lopped out because it takes the focus away from Renton’s story.

Deleted Scene #188 - Renton is pulled away from a soccer game when Diane tells him she’s dumping him for another guy who is in better shape. Boyle felt this was a good scene but that it needed to be cut for pacing reasons.

Deleted Scene #191 - Begbie, Sick Boy, Renton and Spud are talking at the bus station, this scene was cut once again to bring the focus of the film back to Renton.

Disc 2

The first feature on the second disc is the Retrospective. This is broken up into four parts, the first two of which are broken up into Then and Now portions. The Retrospective feature is broken up as follows:

1 – The Look Of The Film: Then (4:00) is a quick chat with Kane Quinn, who talks about the rich layer of visual references that they were able to work into the film. Now (3:00) is a chat with Danny Boyle who gives his thoughts on how the visuals became such an important part of this film, even more so than in most movies, and how it brought the book to life.

2 – The Sound Of The Film: Then (7:41) features footage of Shepperto Studios where most of the postproduction sound work was done on new equipment being used for the first time. Boyle and McDonald are featured. Now (4:50) is interview footage from February of 2003 with McDonald who discusses how Boyle’s taste in music and musical influences came to play such an important part in the success of the film.

3 – Interviews: Irvin Welsh (4:36) speaks about the genesis of the story and what he was going for when he wrote the novel, as well as his feelings about the final version of the film as it appeared on screen. John Hodge (7: talks at length about his screenwriting process and why some of the changes that were made had to be instituted to make the novel work as a movie. Danny Boyle (14:32) speaks about his feelings on the book and how it compares to the film, as well as his overall feelings about working with the team he worked with and how the film ended up turning out. And finally, Andrew McDonald (10:32) gives his thoughts on why he decided to go ahead and produce such a difficult adaptation as Trainspotting and how it all came to pass.

4 – Behind The Needle (6:32) is a feature that lets us take a look at Renton’s injection scene, using a prosthetic, from three very different angles. There is also a section entitled Calton Athletic Boys (0:32) wherein Ewan McGregor talks about some experiences he had with some genuine heroin addicts. This clip is taken from a longer clip that can be seen in its entirety in the Making Of Trainspotting featurette, also on this DVD.

Aside from the Retrospective segment, there’s also a Cannes section where celebrities are interviewed about their take on the film after it screened at the Cannes Film Festival in 1996. Martin Landau (0:53) seems to have enjoyed it and compares Danny Boyle to Tarantino, Noel Gallagher of Oasis (2:11) talks about how it reflected drug use in the Manchester scene happening at the time. Damon Alburn of Blur (1:03) appears to have just woken up but had fun watching the movie. Finally, Ewan McGregor (0:46) discusses how he was pleased with the positive response that the film got from the audience. A Cannes Snapshot (1:57) winds this segment up, featuring snippets of comments, footage from the party, and other material from the festival where the film premiered.

Next up is the Trailers section where you can find the Teaser (1:10) and the Original Theatrical Trailer (2:01).

The Making Of Trainspotting (9:32) is a behind the scenes look at the creation of the film featuring footage with Andrew McDonald who discusses adapting the book, as well as with Ewan McGregor, Danny Boyle and Irvine Welsh, who makes some interesting comments about his work. It’s a rather generic making of segment, but there is some material here that isn’t covered in the other supplements which makes it worth checking out.

Finally, wrapping up the extra features, there are Biographies in text format on the DVD for Danny Boyle, Andrew McDonald, John Hodge, Ewan McGregor, Ewen Bremner, Johnny Lee Miller, Kevin McKidd, Robert Carlyle and Kelly MacDonald, as well as a Gallery comprised of some behind the scenes Polaroid shots set to music (5:05).

Final Thoughts:

Miramax has done a bang up job on this current release, and Trainspotting – The Definitive Edition is a rock solid release with great audio and video and a wealth of interesting extra features. Highly recommended.

Released at the end of 2003 to negative reviews and mediocre box office returns, "Paycheck" also capped Affleck’s notorious trifecta. Along with Affleck’s lethargic performances in "Daredevil" and "Gigli," "Paycheck" was a sure sign that critics and audiences had grown indifferent or even hostile to Affleck’s once ubiquitous appearances in front of the camera. The near future. Michael Jennings (Ben Affleck), a highly skilled engineer, gets a call from an old friend, billionaire businessman James Rethrick (Aaron Eckhart). Rethrick, the CEO/founder of Allcom, a high-tech company, needs Jennings’ help with a top-secret project. Rethrick won’t tell Jennings anything about the project, except that it’ll make Jennings millions. There’s one catch, though. In order to work on the top-secret project and collect Rethrick’s promised millions, Jennings has to undergo a complete mind-wipe at the end of the estimated three year long project. Jennings tours the facility, meets fellow project members, and catches the eye of a biologist, Dr. Rachel Porter (Uma Thurman, underused), working for Allcom. After some hesitation, Jennings agrees and Rethrick’s right-hand man, John Wolfe (Colm Feore), administers the first of two injections necessary to complete the mind-wipe process.Flash forward three years. Jennings awakens (apparently wearing the same suit) and learns that the mystery project is complete and payday’s arrived. He’s also missing three years worth of memories. Happy to be on his way, Jennings stops by the pre-designated bank to collect his earnings, $92 million dollars in Allcom stock. Jennings is all set to enjoy a long, comfortable life in retirement. When he tries to make a withdrawal, however, he discovers that he’s forfeited all rights to the Allcom stock. All that’s left is a yellow manila envelope containing a variety of common objects (e.g., a pack of cigarettes, sunglasses, a bus pass, a diamond ring, a fortune cookie, janitor’s keys, a cigarette lighter, hairspray, a paperclip, a match book, etc.). Before Jennings can figure out what’s going on, two FBI agents, Dodge (Joe Morton) and Klein (Michael C. Hall) arrest Jennings, bring him back to the local FBI offices, and inform Jennings that he’s probably committed treason. With the help of the cigarettes and the sunglasses, Jennings escapes detention. Moments later, the bus pass proves useful in escaping the FBI. With the help of an old friend, Shorty (Paul Giamatti), Jennings begins to piece together the nature of the secret project: a time viewer or window that allows the user to see into the future. Realizing that the time machine will give Rethrick too much power and lead to disaster, the pre-mind wipe Jennings looked into his own future and collected all the necessary objects to successfully escape Rethrick, the FBI, and destroy the machine. He also sabotaged the time machine. The best that can be said about Paycheck is that Affleck and Woo did exactly what the title suggests, they fulfilled their contracts in front and behind the camera, collected their multi-million dollar paychecks, and moved on to other remunerative projects. Affleck followed Paycheck with equally unmemorable roles, Jersey Girl and Surviving Christmas before taking a much-needed year off (partly as a result of the Jennifer Lopez fiasco) and returning in 2006 with a better-than-average (for Affleck) performance as the washed up George Reeves in Hollywoodland and a walk-on role in Smokin’ Aces. Affleck may have a limited range, but when he’s trying (and admittedly that isn’t often), he’s more than watchable (as Changing Lanes showed five years ago.Woo’s post-Paycheck career hasn’t been much better. Besides directing two made-for-television films (one a failed, never-aired pilot, a remake of Lost in Space, Woo has been quiet. Woo’s next project, The Battle of Red Cliff, a Chinese-language martial arts epic, makes all the more obvious that Woo’s sojourn in Hollywood that began in 1994 with Hard Target, Broken Arrow two years later, and Face-Off a year later has reached an end. If Woo’s career in Hollywood is over, then sadly, it’s obvious why: Paycheck was a lackluster, mediocre effort by a filmmaker once considered unparalled in the action genre. The action set pieces aren’t anything a competent director-for-hire couldn’t pull off. There’s little of Woo’s baroque visual style on display. That may have been due to Woo’s disinterest in the material or a limited budget ($60 million doesn’t go as far as it once did). But Paycheck failure isn’t all due to Affleck and Woo’s disinterest in the project. Equal blame has to go to the screenwriter, Dean Georgaris, whose only writing credit before Paycheck was for the forgettable Lara Croft: The Cradle of Life. Why Georgaris was picked to write a screenplay based on a Philip K. Dick short story is anyone’s guess, but the script he came up with is riddled with plot holes, inconsistencies, lapses in logic, and clichéd plot elements that were already derivative when James Cameron used them to much better effect for The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgment Day in 1984 and 1991 respectively or Steven Spielberg used them for Minority Report just a year earlier. To be fair, Philip k. Dick’s short story was written in 1952 and published a year later in Imagination, so the time viewer idea is at least fifty years old. Fairness aside, audiences in 2003 probably thought of The Bourne Identity when Jennings agrees to have his mind wiped in exchange for the multi-million dollar paycheck of the title.Throw an apathetic, indifferent John Woo, a bored listless Affleck, an underused, barely there Uma Thurman, and an unoriginal, limp screenplay by Dean Georgaris, and it’s easy to see why critics and moviegoers passed on "Paycheck" four years ago. With so little effort on display, it’s just as easy to imagine why no one involved will want "Paycheck" listed among their highlights when the time comes to look back on their careers in Hollywood.
divx Paycheck movie downloads
watch movies com
full length Paycheck episodes
watch Paycheck videos on line
watch videos online
full length Paycheck vids
watch videos on line

Harry Potter, you bore me.

The first Harry Potter film had newness on its side — a sense of discovery and wonder that worked well, despite the fact that it wasn’t the best example of great narrative structure. The sequel, Chamber of Secrets did little to build on the momentum, giving us the same characters in similarly perilous situations, bloated to the max with scenes that drag and side characters that did little but annoy.

Despite my tepid feelings toward the franchise, my hopes were still a bit higher for this third adventure, primarily because a new director would be involved in Alfonso Cuaron (Y Tu Mama Tambien, Great Expectations), and a decidedly darker tone than the previous films. To my dismay, what didn’t work in the last film also is the problem with this third installment: the characters are wafer-thin eccentrics, the plot meanders, and the situations remain unmoving. It’s really little more than fanciful imagery and disjointed bits of tumult, packaged together so that fans of the book can see the things they read about and compare how closely the images corresponded to the ones created in their own mind’s eye.

As for the plot, it’s another year at Hogwarts for Harry, and another one filled with danger as escaped prisoner, Sirius Black (Oldman, The Fifth Element), may be out on a mission to take Potter’s life. In response, the prison has dispatched Dementors, fearsome apparitions, to stand guard around Potter and wait for the inevitable appearance of Black at the school. However, there’s much more than meets the eye, as Harry finds out much more about his parents, and the events that led to their demise.

If you’re just wild about Harry, nothing I can do or say will probably dissuade you from enjoying this film, despite the fact that it isn’t very compelling. You love to read his adventures, love the characters, love the imagery, cohesive storyline be damned. Take the kids, sit for three hours and convince yourself you are watching a cinematic gem to last for all time.

If you haven’t been impressed with the first two films, save your money. Prisoner of Azkaban doesn’t try to improve on the weaknesses to Columbus’ vision so much as to try not to deviate too much from it. The plot is barely a blip on the radar for most of the first half, as we watch a tedious array of tangential scenes that might be fun to read about amid the leisurely pacing of a long book, but do little except ensure apathy despite all of the whimsical sights and sounds. By the time the film does get moving, it’s too little, too late. What happens between Harry and Sirius Black? What’s the connection to Harry’s parents? What about the werewolf sideplot?

The answer to all of these things is, "Who cares?" Unless you are a hardcore Harry Potter fanatic, or a complete sheep that sees anything that is sufficiently hyped enough, this third entry is a messy, muddled snoozefest that only eye-candy addicts and J.K. Rowling zealots could truly be enthralled with.

I was a prisoner of The Prisoner of Azkaban, and after the 2 hour and 20 minute sentence, I am quite glad to finally be released. I’ll reluctantly await the obligatory fourth installment, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, and truly hope Mike Newell can make his turn more than what Columbus and Cuaron did not — something fun and interesting for the non-readers of Potter from beginning to end.

– Follows Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, and followed by Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.

It’s a terrific story of a team of Davids with hoop dreams running a gantlet of patrician Goliaths against a backdrop of momentous social change. The Miners, led by Coach Don Haskins, counted an unprecedented seven African Americans in its lineup, including the starting five in the final game, and changed the sociological makeup of the sport, paving the way for the integration of the major southern collegiate sports conferences. “Glory Road” is a slick, entertaining version of that story, executed with crowd-pleasing efficiency by producer Jerry Bruckheimer, director James Gartner and screenwriters Christopher Cleveland and Bettina Gilois, but not surprisingly lacking in subtlety or complexity. Ripped directly from Disney’s playbook of inspirational sports movies, it’s devoid of any original elements that might deter it from that successful formula, hewing closer to the sentimental cliches of “Remember the Titans” than the much better “Miracle” or “The Rookie.” ADVERTISEMENT As Denzel Washington (”Remember the Titans&#822 and Kurt Russell (”Miracle&#822 did before him, Josh Lucas steps into the role of a tough-talking, high-minded coach who teaches his players more than just a game. Haskins arrives at Texas Western (now the University of Texas-El Paso) to inherit a team notably short on talent. The film has Haskins leaping directly from coaching girls high school basketball to leading the Miners to the championship in his first season, though he actually arrived in El Paso in 1961, and minimal integration had already occurred. These changes seem less about heightened drama or economical storytelling than earning easy laughs. Much of the first part of the movie plays like a culture-clash comedy. Haskins and assistant coach Moe Iba (Evan Jones) recruit from the playgrounds and gyms of the urban north and northeast, gobbling up talent that has been bypassed because of the color of a player’s skin. From Detroit, the Bronx, and Gary, Indiana, the black players arrive in West Texas and think they’ve landed on Mars. As fishes-out-of-water, they must adjust to Haskins’ harsh practices and the Tex-Mex culture before venturing into nearby Juarez for some forbidden entertainment. They reaching a détente with the white players they’ve largely reduced to supporting roles and the team comes together in its first game when Haskins learns to incorporate the new players’ flashy playground game into his defense-first, team-oriented style. Derek Luke stars as the team’s best player, Bobby Joe Hill, who Haskins rides to stay as focused on his game as he is on his girlfriend, Tina (Tatyana Ali). The Miners become a juggernaut quickly rising in the national rankings as they move toward the showdown with all-white Kentucky. The movie works as well as it does on the strength of the performances by Lucas and Luke, and the fact that the players were cast based both on their ability to act as well as play ball. Mehcad Brooks, Alphonso McAuley, Damaine Radcliff, Al Shearer, Sam Jones III and Schin A.S. Kerr do what they can with what are essentially one-dimensional roles, and each has his moment in the spotlight. Emily Deschanel is largely wasted in the thankless role of Haskins’ supportive wife, but Jon Voight brings suitable gravitas in one of his prosthetically-enhanced cameos as the villainous Rupp. The film takes a more serious tack in dealing with the increasing racism faced by the players as the team gains in prominence, although the filmmakers feel the need to embellish on it. In a story as important and inherently dramatic as this one, it seems unnecessary. While it’s a good thing that the film will draw increased attention to them, the team’s accomplishments and the subsequent impact are powerful enough to stand on their own. ‘Glory Road‘ MPAA rating: PG for racial issues, including violence and epithets, and mild language Times guidelines: One savage beating, not especially graphic A Walt Disney Pictures film, released by Buena Vista Pictures Distribution.
Collateral Damage – **1/2 (out of 5) (2002)

Cast: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Cliff Curtis, Francesca Neri, Elias Koteas, John Leguizamo

Directed By Andrew Davis

It looks like things have finally come full circle in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career. In the beginning he made derivative and ultra-violent action vehicles like RAW DEAL and COMMANDO, which were terrible films that had nothing going for them except they starred Arnie and his charisma. COLLATERAL DAMAGE is a return to his bygone days when the meaty scripts were still out of reach and he had to build up a reputation, and it’s sad to think how the once mighty one-man franchise could have fallen so low after a decade of unparalleled greatness for an action star.

Arnold plays Gordon Brewer, a firefighter who loses his wife and only son in a terrorist bombing. The bombing is attributed to a Colombian named Claudio "The Wolf" Perrini, who Brewer had seen moments before the bombing, and who escaped back to Colombia. Frustrated by the CIA’s ambivalence towards Brewer’s wish for swift justice, he sets out himself to Colombia to take down The Wolf himself.

COLLATERAL DAMAGE is a stale routine actioner that probably won’t thrill anyone but the most die-hard and undiscriminating of action fans. Schwarzenegger plays the usual one-man army that he has spent an entire career playing, while the basic plot of a man seeking revenge for his family is a typical staple of the genre. Arnie isn’t the only one who fails to tread new territory, as director Andrew Davis has made vehicles similar to this in THE FUGITIVE, ABOVE THE LAW and CODE OF SILENCE. With nothing really of interest going on, it’s a mostly dull affair, with only a few moments of life when John Leguizamo comes in and does some humorous schtick. Far from the worst vehicle Schwarzenegger has ever done, but certainly not the type of film you’d expect him to make if he plans to ever get his career back on track.

As someone in the latter group, I was still eager to see the film version. Often, the most compulsively readable books become unwatchable movies (’Sleepers’), while the most wildly unreadable books blossom into enthralling cinema (’Naked Lunch’).Writer-director Anthony Minghella’s film of The English Patient makes me want to take another crack at the book. I’ve read that Minghella is faithful to Ondaatje’s plot and time-hopping narrative, and he has found visual equivalents of the famously luscious prose that hooked so many readers (and stood between me and the story). The mysteries and surprises are still there (I will reveal none), but the romance is more central. At its core, this is the story of a man who risks everything and loses it. We meet the "English patient" of the title (Ralph Fiennes), burned almost beyond recognition after his plane is shot down in the North African desert during World War II. In the last days of the war, he is tended in a wrecked monastery by the kindly nurse Hana (Juliette Binoche). He says he remembers nothing; his frequent flashbacks prove otherwise. The patient, it turns out, is a Hungarian count named Almásy. Before the war, Almásy works with British cartographers mapping the sands of the Sahara. There he meets the alluring but married Katharine (Kristin Scott Thomas). A howling sandstorm finds them cooped up tight in a jeep; it’s the start of a beautiful relationship, and a neat metaphor for the way their lives will continue to be sand-blasted by the fates. Half of the movie is Almásy’s bed-ridden reverie, and I expected the nurse Hana to fall in love with her scarred but yearning patient, competing with Katharine’s memory. Not so. Instead, Hana finds love with the sensitive mine-patroller Kip (Naveen Andrews), and Willem Dafoe turns up as a saturnine thief who warns Hana not to put a halo on Almásy any time soon. Minghella, best known for the honestly moving Truly Madly Deeply, doesn’t shy away from overwhelming romance; he runs toward it with a clear head. And clear eyes: photographed by John Seale, this is easily the most ravishing film of the year. The sand seems to drench the actors in deep golden light; the sky is a rich, muted blue, like a still and suspended sea. If there’s a flaw, it lies with Binoche, a capable but rather opaque actress (as she was in Blue). Otherwise, the cast is impeccable. Kristin Scott Thomas finally gets the major role she deserves, and she plays it eagerly and elegantly. Ralph Fiennes, playing both an evasive, obsessed lover and a shattered wreck of a man, powerfully fuses Almásy’s past and present.Almásy thinks he can read anything: foreign languages, maps, Herodotus, people. What he can’t read, tragically, is himself. And in the end he is a map of scars read by Hana. Some would credit Ondaatje for the compelling story. Duly noted. But praise is equally due Anthony Minghella for making it a fine movie.
downloaded English Patient, The movie
English Patient, The movie download
watch a video
divx English Patient, The movie
download English Patient, The videos
English Patient, The internet movie
online English Patient, The dvd

When you go into a movie that evokes the adjectives, "existential" and "philosophical", you can bet that it’s going to be a movie that appeals almost exclusively to people who like things that are on the esoteric side of things. I tend to enjoy smart films, and there’s no denying that I Heart Huckabees, as written and directed by David O. Russell (Three Kings, Flirting with Disaster) is an intelligent film, but sometimes these things can be too clever for their own good. For as much as I found this to be a visually impressive, well-acted, well-scripted, and sporadically amusing affair, there’s just one thing that bothered me, and it’s not the fact that I didn’t understand the profundity of the subject matter. Actually, it is the manic pacing of the comedy that bothered me, breathlessly frenetic to a fault, as if Russell couldn’t stop for even a moment or his whole house of cards would fall apart into nothingness, which I argue would be appropriate for a movie that uses nihilism as a plot device. Yes, this is one where I have to admit personal prejudices that kept me from enjoying what could have been a fun film, as breakneck comedies just never do it for me. Your mileage may vary if this usually doesn’t affect you.

Jason Schwartzman (Spun, Rushmore) plays Albert Markovski, leader of an environmentalist group who have been putting pressure on the department store chain, Huckabees, to help protect the some undeveloped land from urbanization. Albert has also been experiencing some strange coincidences lately, and thinks there must be some reason or sign. He heads to a couple of "existential detectives" (Lily Tomlin and Dustin Hoffman) to find out what the coincidences mean, as well as the meaning of the rest of his existence. However, the investigation necessitates them following every move he makes and conversation Albert is engaged in, and this only seems to complicate matters more, particularly when the detectives are also hired by key members of the Huckabees organization.

Those interested in philosophy, particularly in the interconnections of existentialism and nihilism, will find lots to like in this very ambitious and original comedy. It is also recommended for those who enjoy offbeat films, and even if the meanings of the films aren’t always clear, the fact that you’re watching something that feels important and refreshing will probably keep you engaged, despite the perplexing nature of what it’s all supposed to mean. The third kind of audience is the one that basically ignores that which they don’t understand and just enjoys the movie’s energy and moments of inspired lunacy, watching some of their favorite actors having a good time with the material (this is the audience who enjoys the film purely on a visceral level, resolved to small moments, even if the big picture eludes them). The rest, which probably constitutes the majority of potential viewers, is probably of the audience that either won’t stick with it for long, or if they do, will grow frustrated by the pretentious nature of the writing, with characters and situations that offer little to connect to.

I realize I’m being simplistic about the above paragraph, as I’m probably ignoring certain unique individuals out there who absolutely connect with the film on every level, as well as those who might enjoy it for one particular aspect, such as the performances of Tomlin (Orange County, The Kid) and Hoffman (Meet the Fockers, Finding Neverland). However, I just wanted to stress that I Heart Huckabees has its audience, and I do recognize that for some viewers, it is indeed a good film. It’s the kind of movie where I personally didn’t find enough interest or entertainment value, but if I knew someone who would seem like they meet the aforementioned entertainment standards, I would probably steer them in its direction.

While I didn’t find enough here to satisfy me (in fact, I grew bored with it fairly early), the performances and the look of the film were enough to keep my interest modestly throughout. For those who haven’t seen it, I would say that if it looks like it has some appeal, it’s worth giving a shot, although a movie this experimental is just as likely to turn you off as it is to completely blow you away, depending on your background and what it is you look for in a movie. As for me, I Heart Huckabees is a movie that probably flew over my head thematically, but is well-made enough that I could see myself watching it again in a few years and perhaps being completely absorbed by. For now, it remains a muddled curiosity that offers just enough to intellectually tease, but not enough to truly engage.
divx I Heart Huckabees movie
watch full length I Heart Huckabees movies
I Heart Huckabees video download
I Heart Huckabees videos downloads
watch I Heart Huckabees full movie
watch movies on the internet
I Heart Huckabees divx trailers

The Session

Sally: “Hello everyone, and welcome to another meeting of Cinema Trash-Lover Anonymous. It seems we have a new participant this evening, so let’s all welcome him.”

Scott: “Hi, everybody. My name’s Scott Weinberg and … I love Con Air. I’ve tried everything, honestly. Self-medication, hypnosis, Scorsese marathons… Nothing works. Every time I see more than 11 seconds of Con Air, I just have to sit down and watch the whole loud, stupid, ridiculous thing. So I thought group therapy might help…”

(Stunned silence)

Sally: “Now now, let’s be supportive here. Glen, for example, really loves… What was it, Glen?”

Glen: “Krull. So what? Peter Yates is underrated. Liam Neeson’s in it. You wanna make something of it?”

Sally: “No, no, Krull’s fine, Glen. Love that Glaive. And what about you, Dawn. Would you care to introduce yourself?”

Dawn: “I swear I’m never leaving the house again.”

Scott: “What?”

Dawn: “Who’s ready to party on the big boat besides me?”

Sally: “Oh, yes. Dawn speaks only through the dialogue of Speed 2. She’s made remarkable progress.”

Scott: “Good to meet everyone, but I think I might need a level 9 intervention here. I mean … Con Air.”

Sally: “Scott, knowing you have a problem is half the battle. Why not explain where you think this affliction comes from.”

Scott: “It was supposed to be just another action movie. Nicolas Cage is a super-macho army-dude who gets thrown into prison after killing this asshole in self-defense. I just couldn’t believe it…”

Sally: “Well, you know it’s just a movie…”

Scott: “Yeah, but it was so unfair. And his wife was so hot.”

Sally: “So he’s sent to prison.”

Scott: (openly weeping) “Yeah. And while he’s in prison his really smokin’ hot wife has their baby, and get this: on the day he’s supposed to be released, he ends up on a hijacked plane full of, like, 10 really colorfully disgusting bad guys. I mean they’re rapists and lunatics and…”

Sally: “And Nicolas Cage has to find a way to survive.”

Scott: “Oh, if only! He also has a best friend dying of insulin shock, a lady guard threatened with rape every 19 minutes, and a Colombian drug cartel to quash! Seriously, there’s enough stuff in here for 11 Simon West movies.”

Sally: “So why is it that you find yourself drawn to this particular film?”

Scott: “It’s just awesome. Con Air is pretty grim and violent, but it has a really twangy comic-book sensibility, too, as if the filmmakers realized ‘Hey, if we’re going to make an outlandish action flick, let’s make it rrrreally outlandish.’ Plus, and I know you’re gonna think I’m insane, but…”

Sally: “Go on. It’s OK.”

Scott: “I think it’s actually pretty … clever, too.”

(Muffled chuckles fill the room.)

Scott: “I know, I know. It’s shameful. But the screenplay, which I hear was cobbled together by about seven screenwriters, actually has quite a lot of zing and wit.”

Sally: “It’s the Cusack factor, isn’t it?”

Scott: “It’s gotta be. I mean, it’s fun to see Cage in a mullet and emoting like a Louisiana inbred, but there’s something so enjoyably bizarre about seeing John Cusack glib his way through a mega-wacky Jerry Bruckheimer action flick. And the guy has some fun with it, too, like he knows he’s way out of his element.”

Sally: “Your chart says you have an extreme weakness for big ensembles and grizzled character actors. This might help to explain why…”

Scott: “Oh don’t even get me started. Malkovich, as head scumbag Cyrus Grissom, is the most hilariously evil villain this side of Clarence Boddicker. The guy gets four consecutive death scenes, so you just know he’s evil. And he’s got henchmen galore! A devious master racist (Ving Rhames), an oily slasher (Steve Buscemi), a hillbilly pilot (M.C. Gainey), a vile rapist (Danny Trejo), a nasty thug (Nick Chinlund), a tiny cross-dresser (Renoly Santiago), a two-bit crackhead (Dave Chappelle)…

Sally: “That’s a lot of villains, to be sure, but…”

Scott: “I know, right? And it’s all up to mulleted Nic Cage and snarky office-guy Cusack to save the day. Plus there’s Star Trek guy (Colm Meaney) as a pompous ass and a really hot co-worker (Angela Featherstone) who serves no real purpose in the movie at all…

Sally: “OK, so you like the admittedly silly concept, and you’re a big fan of the ensemble casting. There’s nothing too crazy about…”

Scott: “Sally. Have you actually seen Con Air?”

Sally: “No. I don’t much care for R-rated movies.”

Scott: “OK, well, this is easily one of the silliest action flicks ever made. I swear: the flick plays like it was originally intended to be done as a cartoon. Everything is beefed-up, broad, and … almost satirical in delivery. It’s not exactly a spoof of action flicks, but everyone involved clearly has tongue wedged firmly within cheek.”

Sally: “So you think…”

Scott: “Oh, and the score. Love the Con Air music. Honest.”

Sally: “OK, that’s fine, but…”

Scott: “Don’t judge me.”

Sally: “We’re not…”

Scott: “Yes! Yes, I know I have a problem! I fully acknowledge that Con Air is to cinema what Garfield’s Coloring Book Volume 4 is to literature! I’m sick, help me!”

Sally: “Look, Scott, you obviously have some real problems. Your file indicates that you also enjoy watching Resident Evil, Deep Rising, Charlie’s Ang…

Scott: “Someone unlock these handcuffs. I know my rights.”

Sally: “Scott, we have a standard test regarding people afflicted with Con Air Syndrome, and here it is: The song that plays just as the end credits roll, I believe it goes “How Do I Live Withouuuutt Youuuuu?” — what do you think of this song?”

Scott: “I don’t have to answer these questions. I’m from Philadelphia, you know. Birthplace of…”

Sally: “Answer the question.”

Scott: “Look, I’ll be OK. Someone go get my Amadeus DVD. Pizza’s on me.”

Sally: “Scott, the Live Without You song? Please?”

Scott: “OK OK, I like that awful freakin’ song, too! It’s like the perfect cornball icing on the ultimate cheeseball cake! I’m sorry! Look, forget Con Air! Let’s talk about Schindler’s List! That’s a good movie! I can have good taste sometimes!”

The DVD

Video: The anamorphic widescreen (2.35:1) transfer is a marked improvement over the previous “bare-bones” release … but we’ll further define the term “bare-bones” in just a few seconds.

Audio: Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound, which I like to play extra-loud when nobody’s home. Optional English subtitles are available if you blow your eardrums out while watching Con Air.

Extras: OK, so get this: The previous release of Con Air came with a theatrical teaser and a trailer. Fans of the flick would surely rejoice given such riches. Naturally, we expect a new “unrated extended edition” to come packing a few extra goodies. Nope.

Not even the two trailers from the previous release have been included here! All we get are some Disney previews for Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest, Grey’s Anatomy S1, Glory Road, Annapolis, Crimson Tide: Extended Edition, and Enemy of the State: Special Edition — and I bet you good money that those last two have a Con Air trailer on ‘em!! Grrrr.

Oh, and as far as the “new stuff” that’s always wedged back into a movie when a studio wants to make a few extra nickels, Con Air Extended offers the following stuff. (And I spotted all this stuff instantly, which should tell you how many times I’ve seen Con Air in the past several years.)

(Extended version “spoilers” may be found in the following rambl

Early in the flick, Poe’s eventual attacker says something snide about his lovely Tricia — something nastier than in the theatrical cut. There’s also a glimpse of Poe getting arrested that wasn’t there before, as well as a sequence in which Baby-O (Mykelti Williamson) rescues Poe from a burning cell during a prison riot. There are some tweaks made to Dave Chappelle’s dialogue, and a little extra back-story on how Poe once killed a prison bully called “The Giant.” Danny Trejo gets to deliver an extra dose of rapist ugliness, and there’s also a semi-pointless conversation between Cusack’s & Featherstone’s characters. Colm Meaney gets an extra moment to ruminate over the death of his DEA agent, Cage shares a few extra words with prison guard Bishop, Garland (Buscemi) gets to kill a guard (off-camera, but unexpected!), and Bishop shares a quick exchange with con-pilot Swamp Thing. There’s also a moment of looting when the cons land at Lerner Field, and a good deal of extra interplay between Poe and his buddy Baby-O.

The theatrical cut of Con Air runs 115 minutes; this one goes for 122.

Final Thoughts

You’ll be happy to know that after a month-long diet of Kubrick, Hitchcock, and the Coen Brothers, I was released from the Home for the Criminally Schlock-Addicted, and have since gone on to recommend films as varied as The Proposition, The Notorious Bettie Page, and United 93.

(Silent Hill and Poseidon were pretty awesome, too, but don’t tell my therapist I said that.)
Con Air videos for download
download Con Air dvd movies
download Con Air dvd online
full movie
video downloads
watch Con Air video online
download divx Con Air movies

One of the many problems with America is that rather than work together for
a common good, all the groups that make it up would rather fight with one
another. This is a theme that pervades the documentary, and it is surprising
to find that it is really secondary in terms of America’s reaction to the
film compared to the general American public’s fear of
reality.

Like any other Paul Verhoeven film, nothing that happens in real life was
shied away from in Basic Instinct. How much of this relates back to
Verhoeven himself, and how much of it is Joe Ezsterhas’ doing, is still open
for debate. However, one aspect of the film that shines through in spite of
all the idiocy is how brilliantly it was put together.

One of the many stand-out features of the actual film is that one would
never guess it is only the second film Verhoeven shot in the aspect ratio of
2.35:1, which is understandable considering how dynamic some of the shots
are. This, however, is one of the many subjects one would expect from a
making-of that is never touched on in spite of the fact that the documentary
features appearances from cinematographer Jan De Bont.

By far the standout feature of the documentary is the activists from Queer
Nation, who still have no idea how their protests of the film have backfired
upon them some ten years after the fact. One of them even has the audacity
to claim that their protests brought Hollywood to "change its tune" and
bring out shows like Ellen. She seems blissfully unaware that Hollywood
never changes its tune. Its tune is always "oh wow, here’s another market I
can exploit!". Nor does she realise how much harm they have done to the
average cinephile’s view of how much respect the gay community really has
for the First Amendment when it isn’t applying to them.

However, this creates another quandry when it comes to assessing one of
Verhoeven’s most famous works. Should the film be viewed as a classic
because it is a tight story shot beautifully? Or should it be viewed simply
as a classic bait to expose organisations like Queer Nation for what they
are? One could lose sweep over questions like that.

It is worth noting the conspicuous absence of both Sharon Stone and Joe
Eszterhas, two people Verhoeven had major conflicts with after the film was
released. Indeed, contrary to the perception some viewers might walk away
with after this documentary, Verhoeven has sworn he’ll never work with Joe
again. After some of the other scripts to Joe’s credit, such as Jade (which,
you will note, organisations like Queer Nation or N.O.W. did not protest), I
am surprised anyone else is surprised.

In the end however, the purpose of a documentary is to inform and entertain
at the same time. While Blonde Poison is certainly entertaining, to call it
informative about anything other than how special interest groups are
nullifying democracy in America would be extremely generous. Sure, there are
tidbits such as choices regarding the score or how the project got started,
but there should have been so much more.

All in all, a 5 out of ten from me. It is worth watching once, but the audio
commentaries on the DVDs give the viewer so much more.
