One of Marvel’s second-tier "superhero" comics combines elements that were popular in the 1970s, including horror influences, motorcycle stunts, and a nomad protagonist who righted wrongs wherever he was needed.  "Ghost Rider" wasn’t exactly scintillating as far as comic books go, and it never really climbed to the top of the heap in terms of popularity, but the anti-hero did have a unique premise, cool look, and an avid fan following among comic readers who enjoyed both the superhero and horror books of its era.

After several years to get the project off the ground after the popularity of the superhero/horror hit that was Blade, Ghost Rider finally sees the light of the projector, with avid comic book aficionado Nicolas Cage (The Wicker Man, World Trade Center) in the starring role.  Unfortunately for the project, the writing and directing chores would go to Mark Steven Johnson, who made a name for himself, though not necessarily a good one, for his work on a previous Marvel big screen adaptation in Daredevil.   Like that film, Ghost Rider is given a slick, rock video-style look and feel, but offers just as little in the depth of its characters, rich dialogue, or plot developments.  To give him credit, Johnson does know how to stage the action, but reveals just how limited his talent is whenever his characters engage in the act of talking to one another. Perhaps Johnson would have done well to bring in a ghost writer.

Cage stars as motorcycle stuntman Johnny Blaze, who becomes a household name for his death-defying jumps in packed arenas around the country.  As a teenager, Blaze singed away his sold the the devil (Fonda, The Cannonball Run), quite literally, in order to remove his father’s cancer, but as part of the bargain, he agrees to become the "devil’s bounty hunter", taking the form of a super-powered, flaming skeletal monster with the ability to thwart adversaries with a penance stare.  After years of dormancy, Mephistopheles finally cashes in his chips when his son Blackheart (Bentley, American Beauty) arrives, along with three elemental nasties, in order to try to overthrow his father and lay dominion on the world, Although Blaze refuses, he has little say in the matter, as his flaming alter ego takes care of business of trying to dispatch these demons before harm befalls mankind.  However, Blackheart soon discovers a weak link in the ghost rider’s chain in the form of Roxanne Simpson (Mendes, Trust the Man), a news reporter covering Blaze who also happens to have been his true childhood love he left behind.

It’s uncertain just how much of the film’s campy qualities are intentional, as the entirety of the dialogue is handled with such a straight-faced delivery.  Some of it goes for cheesy laughs, such as Blaze’s rabid obsession with the music of the Carpenters, and for some reason, watching shows about monkeys on television.  It’s difficult to imagine these actors delivering these lines as if they were dripping with heavy meaning, but they do, perhaps thinking an earnest reading would be the only way to keep the film from coming off too much like the joke-fest that marred the debut of Fantastic Four.  As laughable as some of it is, intentionally and unintentionally, the hokey nature of Ghost Rider provides the only moments of interest in the entire production.

We care little about the characters or the main story, while the villains lack any depth other than they look scary and do nasty things once in a while.  At 114 minutes, it’s a a real test of one’s attention span, as even the well-rendered action has little in the way of actual logic to it.  Ghost Rider finds ways to best his opponents using a variety of different weapons or powers, but we really learn next to nothing as far as how or why he knows how to use these tools or talents.

The best thing one can say about this film version of Ghost Rider is the same thing one can say about the comic book upon which it is based.  Quite simply, Ghost Rider just looks cool.  With his flaming skull head, studded leather jacket, fire-accented chopper, and a magnificent chain as his weapon of choice, he looks unlike any other hero out there, With a much more fleshed-out origin and actors more suitable to their respective parts, perhaps the rest of it could have matched up to the level of coolness inherent in the look of its protagonist.  Alas, it isn’t in the cards.  Nicolas Cage looks too old for the part; though childhood sweethearts,  the adult Blaze looks much older than Roxanne, which shouldn’t come as a surprise, since Cage has ten years on co-star Mendes.

Mendes also falls far short of brining any depth into her character (unless you count the depth of her cleavage), and with very limited acting skills, she has a difficult time performing action, showing a sense of fear, or even in trying to evoke any sort of attraction for her lifelong romantic interest.  Peter Fonda is cast here as Mephistopheles, probably only due to his most famous of roles in that other great motorcycle film, Easy Rider.  Neither he nor Bentley (as Blackheart) exhibit anything remotely close to the formidable menace required to make us quake in our boots from fear.

Unless you are an undiscriminating fan of the "Ghost Rider" comic, or just style-over-substance action films of the most goofy variety, Ghost Rider is too lean in terms of interesting developments, while also taking far too long in getting from A to Z.  The film ends with the possibility of a sequel, but given this entry’s considerable liabilities (Cage’s age and a critical lack of interest generated), the project seems as doomed as the many souls harvested throughout the film itself.  Only the visage of the Rider’s fiery skull and flame retardant leather jacket merits a blip on the coolness radar; it’s too bad that the skulls of those who created such vacuous entertainment were so idea retardant.

"Joe Pesci’s the zaniest hitman in town!" (Awesome)

Scorsese’s "Godfather". Amazing camerawork, kickass performances, and Joe Pesci beating the shit out of Frank Vincent. This is an absolutely brilliant movie. I first saw a snippet of it when I was about 14, and my dad was watching it on video in the basement. I came down, and heard, in that 30 seconds, more profanity than I had ever heard in my life up until that point. People swear a LOT in this movie. Despite my love of "The Godfather", I always felt it was a little too romanticized. It only dealt with the absolute upper levels of power. The guys in "Goodfellas" are nowhere NEAR the top of the heap. These guys are the soldiers, the guys who get all the dirty work. And they love it. What’s amazing about this movie is that despite all the horrible things that Henry Hill (Ray Liotta) goes through, he still would never dream of leaving the mafia. Scorsese manages to make the mob look both attractive and repellent. The guys in the flick sure seem like they’re having lots of fun. Until Robert De Niro stomps on their head. The best scene in this movie is Robert De Niro stomping on Frank Vincent’s head. It’s a marvel of cinematic brilliance. De Niro kicks ass in this movie, Joe Pesci kicks SERIOUS ass in this movie, but Liotta’s kind of a wimp. So back to Joe Pesci. His scenes with his mom (actually Scorsese’s mom) are the funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life. And when he shoots Spider in the foot because he’s too slow getting Joe a drink, well….let’s just say that the mob has never looked like so much fun. Well, I guess for everyone except Spider. And Frank Vincent. Oh, but he gets his revenge in "Casino". Yay, Frank Vincent. The first really funny movie about the Mafia. And use this film as a tool to teach your kids to swear effectively.

Fifth Element, The
Starring Bruce Willis and Milla Jovovich, THE FIFTH ELEMENT is a stylized, upbeat film one can categorize within the “melting pot” genre. It is funny, well written, action packed, with the gunfights, explosions, and car chases you would expect from a good Willis film. One of my favorite films of all time, THE FIFTH ELEMENT attaches a spectacular visual frame of reference for what is an original and beautifully arranged aural achievement. The film begins with a history lesson about a secret society of monks who are sworn to guard a temple, and the weapon it holds within it’s stone walls. Just as an archeologist is deciphering the messages on the tomb doors, one of the monks from the order arrive to assassinate him. Before the man has a chance to drink the poison, a group of Mondoshawan aliens arrive in a large spaceship and take the artifcats from the temple. They leave the monk with a message, to protect the secret and prepare the altar for their arrival when evil comes again in 500 years. In the future, the city has grown so high that people drive hovercraft and live in apartments smaller than a Chelsea studio. This is the time of prophecy, and the Mondoshawan approach earth in an attempt to return the 5 elements to the temple and activate the weapon for it’s battle against the coming evil. Before it can drop off the goods, the ship is attacked and crash lands on a nearby moon. Salvaged from the wreakage is a piece of material with a few cells remaining that the scientists are able to duplicate and rebuild. LeeLoo (Jovovich) is the product of the restoration, and uses her super strength and agility to escape the lab. Left with no place to run, she takes a leap of faith from the buildings ledge and crashes through the roof of Korbin Dallas’ (Bruce Willis) taxi cab. After fleeing from the authorities, she tells him she needs to be taken to a priest, who happens to be the secret society monk that is awaiting the arrival of the 5 elements. Behind all the sabatoge and sinister activity is the evil corporation leader, Zorg (Gary Oldman). He is working for the Evil (the bad guy we never really see) and in kahoots with a mercinary tribe of aliens who do his dirtywork. As the Evil approaches earth and comes into contact with federation ships, it becomes clear that the planetoid is headed to crash into earth and is destined to destroy life, the universe, and existence as we know it. On a race against time, LeeLoo teams up with the priest and Korbin on a quest to obtain the stones and return them to the temple before the evil mass arrives. Along the way, they are befriended by and the nutty shock-jock Ruby Rod (Chris Tucker), a blue singing diva named Plava Laguna, and a wacky cast of characters unlike anything seen before onscreen. With costumes and designs done by Jean Paul Gaultier, you can be sure to see an eccentric mix of futuristic and fashonable folks wandering the screen. Directed by Luc Besson, THE FIFTH ELEMENT is the most expensive film to ever be produced outside Hollywood, with it’s special effects budget hitting the 80 million dollar mark. It was also selected to open the Cannes Film Festival in 1997. Overall, expect a lot of action and some wisecracking humor with this film. An out of this world moment of cinematic brillance which highlights the stylistic accomplishment of Besson’s vision and Gaultier’s fashion is the diva sequence where Plava Laguna performs a spectacular rendition of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor over a montage of fight scenes outside the operahouse. Truely one of the most incredible moments in recent cinema, the sequence preludes the mad frenzy of terrorist activity and chaos that the film works through until the credits.

NeverEnding Story, The

I would suppose it doesn’t always bode well for a film when the author of the book (Michael Ende) upon which it is based wants his name removed from the opening credits.  The Neverending Story is a much loved movie for those who saw it through the undiscriminating eyes of a child, and I suppose children, or those who are nostalgic, comprise most of the people that might want to watch it today.  So this presents me with a perplexing predicament.  Am I going to play the horrible ogre that must declare this film is cheesy dreck?  Do I actually have the gall to proclaim such a well-loved piece of classic 80s kiddy fantasy as mediocre schmaltz?

Yeah…I guess that’s me.

First, the story….not to spoil it, but it does end at some point.  We start off with a young boy named Bastian (Oliver, D.A.R.Y.L.), whose life ain’t so peachy, with a recently deceased mother, an aloof father (McRaney, "Simon & Simon"), and a school life which consists mostly of running from three bullies with apparently nothing better to do than whoop Bastian’s ass at every available turn.  While running from the terrible trio, Bastian escapes into a bookstore where he pilfers a book entitled "The Neverending Story" which he takes to school with him and reads in the attic(?)  He reads the heroic tale of Atreyu (Hathaway, Battlestar Galactica), the boy warrior and his quest to save Fantasia from the dreaded Nothing.  Bastion becomes a little more involved in the story than he originally thought he should be.

The Neverending Story is a highly imaginative tale which just doesn’t have what it takes to be a truly classic children’s film.  One of the main detractions comes from the very thing most people might praise it for.  Sure, there is a lot of imagination put into the sets, costumes and special effects, but much of these things are crafted unattractively, and the ensuing characterizations are derivative and one-dimensional.  The sets are a combination of muck, goop and rocks, and one might wonder if the Rock-Biter didn’t sneeze Fantasia into existence.  There are two concurrent stories, both of which merge as the narratives roll on; Bastian searches for inner-strength through imagination, while his fictional counterpart, Atreyu, searches for…um…the name of Fantasia’s princess?? Regardless of the parallel themes, the way in which these stories merge leads to some unintentional humor, often delving into the realm of unprecedented cornball absurdity.

Ok, so I gather one might praise The Neverending Story because it teaches kids great things like…um…reading is cool and…um…imagination is cool…and um…ummm…

I feel the need for a list here…

10 Things I "learned" from watching The Neverending Story

1.  No amount of drinking can possibly erase a Giorgio Moroder theme song from memory.

2.  Contrary to popular belief, school bullies are actually quite studious, chasing their weaker prey while their backpacks are crammed to the max with books.

3. Until viewing this film, I had no knowledge of the existence of the school attic.  I often wondered where the school kept all of its skeletons, animal heads, candles and mice.

4. It is OK for children to steal what they like from local patrons provided they leave a note that they will return the item later.

5. The more unintelligible a name is, the more beautiful it must be.

6. If you have the ability to make all your dreams come true, make sure that the first thing you do is a noble thing, like flying through the air on a giant Pound Puppy in order to torment your fellow schoolmates.  Such things as bringing back one’s dead mother can wait until after your bloodlust has been fully quenched.

7. The proper medium for showcasing the power of reading and using one’s own imagination is through watching a movie.

8. The door to a child’s imagination will most likely be opened by a crusty old man who doesn’t like children and who scoffs at videogames (another form of interactive fantasy).

9.  The Swamp of Sadness will apparently only kill beings that let sadness overtake them.  It’s a good thing for Atreyu that walking through the swamp while crying over the death of his horse friend doesn’t fall into the sadness category.

10. If you are late for your math test, ditch it.  If it’s getting late and your father doesn’t know your whereabouts, screw him.  You are reading a good book, dammit, and can’t be bothered.

I could go on, but you get the hint.  The Neverending Story is a film mainly for young children, and I suppose if you are thinking of letting a child view it, or are wanting to watch a childhood favorite, I certainly would not scoff.  However…and I may be a tad coy with this statement…while I like fantasies well enough, is it too much to ask to make a fantasy less unrealistic?

Affair of the Necklace, The Reviewed By Greg Muskewitz Posted 09/07/02 19:07:21

"An embarrassing state of affairs." (Total Crap)

Repugnant period piece pre-French Revolution, beyond even laughably bad, with Hilary Swank and company colluding to retrieve a “stolen” necklace. It’s filled with unsubtle flashbacks, aimless coloration gimmicks, barren sexuality and pedantic direction. In other words, there is hardly a moment where something isn’t being hit over your head. It’s pathetic and humiliating for all involved, and director Charles Shyer gets more laughs for this than those in his sterile comedies combined (Father of the Bride, Father of the Bride, Part II). This is rather a very embarrassing state of affairs. With Adrian Brody, Jonathan Pryce, Brian Cox, Joely Richardson, Christopher Walken and Hayden Panettiere.[Not to be bothered with.]

The Movie

For all the couch-jumping craziness, Scientology oddity, creepy romances with budding ingenues and public spankings from corporate overlords, one fact got somewhat lost in the shuffle: Mission: Impossible III (or M:I:III if you’re nasty) is a damn fine return to form. The M:I franchise was on life support after John Woo’s artful but inert 2000 sequel to Brian De Palma’s invigorating 1996 adaptation of the Sixties TV classic, one of the better films of the Nineties. Overblown and drained of any real spy-centric sequences, Mission: Impossible II often felt like a trailer in search of a film; Cruise’s sizzle-less chemistry with Thandie Newton, that absurdly protracted fist-fight between Cruise and the bland Dougray Scott, as well as a needlessly overheated plot didn’t exactly help matters either.

Some time away from the material seems to have rejuvenated both Cruise and the creative team — after cycling through a series of directors who came close to pulling the trigger but ultimately walked away (including David Fincher and Joe Carnahan), Cruise ingeniously tapped “Felicity,” “Alias” and “Lost” mastermind J.J. Abrams to overhaul the ailing series and start fresh, from both a screenplay and directorial standpoint. It’s a move that worked, but in all of Cruise’s self-sabotaging PR bumbles, might have been obscured — fortunately, now that much of the TomKat madness has subsided, Mission: Impossible III can be appreciated for what it is: a top-shelf Hollywood summer blockbuster, served up with panache and wit and featuring one of the more chillingly realized villains of 2006, Owen Davian (played with obvious relish by Capote Oscar winner Philip Seymour Hoffman).

Outside of Hoffman, Mission: Impossible III boasts a tremendous ensemble cast: Billy Crudup, Keri Russell, Laurence Fishburne, Michelle Monaghan, Simon Pegg (in a role originally intended for Ricky Gervais), Maggie Q, Jonathan Rhys Meyers and the only actor returning with Cruise for the third time, Ving Rhames. It’s these players who elevate Alex Kurtzman, Roberto Orci and Abrams’s lean, muscular script into something approaching a cerebral action-drama — of all the M:I films, this is easily the one that insults your intelligence least, although it does ask viewers to accept some sizable coincidences, particularly near the finale; that said, it does hew remarkably close to its own internal logic.

As the film begins (after a white-knuckle opening sequence that will rivet you to the screen), Ethan Hunt (Cruise), now retired from IMF, is co-hosting an engagement party with his bride-to-be Julia Meade (Monaghan) when he’s surreptitiously alerted of agent Lindsey Farris’s (Russell, in an extended cameo) abduction by ruthless arms dealer Owen Davian (Hoffman). Dispatched with an IMF team that includes Luther Stickell (Rhames), Declan Gormley (Rhys Meyers) and Zhen Lei (Maggie Q), Hunt soon finds himself charged with the task of tracking down Owen and putting him away for good. While Hunt chases the arms dealer around the world — with stops in Rome and Shanghai — he must also contend with interoffice politics, including a squabble between Musgrave (Crudup) and his superior, Theodore Brassel (Fishburne). Twists and turns aplenty bring viewers full circle, back to the exceptionally tense opening moments — Mission: Impossible III is able to deliver upon that jaw-dropping sequence, cementing it as one of the few enjoyable blockbusters from the summer of ‘06.

More than its screenplay, assured direction and A-list cast, Mission: Impossible III works because of its cold-bloodedness: actions have consequences, secrets have repercussions and sense of ruthless inevitability permeate the propulsive action set-pieces. It distinguishes this film from its predecessors in a willingness to turn up the volume and leave bodies behind; there’s a brutality — personified by Owen Davian — that informs the rest of the film. The villain is playing for keeps and thankfully, so too does this surprisingly intense and (mostly) bloodlessly violent PG-13 movie. It’s but one of many elements Abrams and his team get right, but it’s one that sets the film on a firm foundation. There are those who raise the point that much of what passes for narrative in Mission: Impossible III is recycled and repurposed from other sources and it’s a fair accusation — few summer movies aspire to anything approaching originality — but I would argue that Abrams and company thieve this material with such flair that it’s hard to hold a grudge.

There are many out there who may bypass Mission: Impossible III altogether based merely on the reputation of its star and his highly visible antics. Be that as it may — if you’re willing to separate the man from the movie, you’ll find that Mission: Impossible III is a thoroughly involving popcorn action flick, the kind that so many trailers promise every year but often fail to deliver. It’s a kinetic, compelling piece of high-end multiplex amusement and as the summer of ‘06 goes, one of its best.

The DVD

The Video:

Slick, sharp and spotless, this 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen transfer of Mission: Impossible III sparkles throughout, proving that every dollar of its absurdly high budget made it up on screen. Blacks are deep and rich, there’s no noticeable edge enhancement or haloing and skin tones look warm and accurate. A crisp visual presentation.

The Audio:

The audio matches the visuals step-for-step here: a very immersive, spacious Dolby Digital 5.1 track is on board — fully alive and rich with detailed surround activity, this is one boisterous mix that becomes even more vivid during the many action sequences (check out the German rescue mission and trailer highlighted bridge scene). A French Dolby Digital 5.1 track is here and optional English and Spanish subtitles are also on board.

The Extras:

Hitting the streets on the laughably titled “Mission Monday,” Mission: Impossible III is arriving in a flurry of formats: single disc, double disc, as part of the “Ultimate Missions Collection,” as well as on Blu-Ray and HD-DVD. I won’t detail what is or is not on every digital iteration of the film, but will say that for those considering whether to purchase the one or two-disc set, that decision will hinge on how much Cruise worship/behind-the-scenes information you’d like. The single disc release includes only a Cruise/Abrams commentary track, “The Making of the Mission” featurette, five deleted scenes, the BAFTA “Excellence in Film” montage and trailers for Transformers, World Trade Center and “The Tom Cruise Collection.”

The more lavish two-disc “collector’s edition” features the congratulatory, occasionally strange and often overly adulatory commentary track by the hyper-talkative Cruise and Abrams, as well as the 28 minute, 39 second “The Making of the Mission” featurette, presented in anamorphic widescreen, as well as the five deleted scenes, playable separately or all together for an aggregate of roughly 18 minutes in time-coded anamorphic widescreen, the nine minute, 12 second “Excellence in Film” montage from the 2005 BAFTAs and the aforementioned trailers.

The second disc houses the meat of the supplemental material: six featurettes — the 21 minute, 12 second “Inside The IMF”; the 25 minute, 38 second “Mission Action: Inside The Action Unit”; the 10 minute, 39 second “Visualizing The Mission”; the eight minute, nine second “Mission: Metamorphosis”; the four minute, 59 second “Scoring The Mission” and the five-part (playable separately or together for an aggregate of roughly 38 minutes) “Launching The Mission” — along with the eight minute “Moviefone Unscripted: Tom Cruise/J.J. Abrams,” the three minute, 36 second “Generation: Cruise” tribute montage from the 2005 MTV Movie Awards (were TWO montages really necessary?), a quartet of theatrical trailers (a teaser, two full theatrical and a Japanese trailer, all playable separately or all together), six TV spots (again, playable separately or all together) and a photo gallery rounding out the set. In a nice touch, optional English, Spanish and French subtitles are available on all the featurettes. All told, these are featurettes that, thankfully, go beyond mere EPKs and truly delve into the nuts and bolts of mounting a bajillion-dollar blockbuster — despite Paramount and Cruise’s very public falling-out, I’m glad they saw fit to send their star off with a well-stuffed DVD set that doesn’t (at least on the surface) scream “imminent double dip.” (Four easily locatable Easter eggs are also on the second disc — a 56-second clip of Abrams flying a plane; a one minute, 39 second clip of Monahan touring Xitang, a fishing village 90 minutes outside of Shanghai; a 47-second clip of Vatican City outtakes and a 44-second clip of Cruise and Fishburne rehearsing, with Cruise imitating Fishburne.)

Final Thoughts:

There are many out there who may bypass Mission: Impossible III altogether based merely on the reputation of its star and his highly visible antics. Be that as it may — if you’re willing to separate the man from the movie, you’ll find that Mission: Impossible III is a thoroughly involving popcorn action flick, the kind that so many trailers promise every year but often fail to deliver. Wild, The
As a director, I have not been too wild about Sean Penn movies. They meander too much, and don’t care much about plot. The acting is usually far too over the top, and method, and it’s just distracting. Somehow, Into The Wild manages to totally avoid all the trappings of his previous films, and delivers a powerful true story of a young man escaping from the world around him. Emile Hirsch plays Christopher McCandless, who in 1990, after graduating from college, takes out all his savings and gives it to charity. He then begins to wander across this great land, meeting all sorts of different people in his ultimate goal of living by himself in Alaska. McCandless has read far too much Thoreau, and believes that man should live on his own, in the wilderness, with nothing but his thoughts, far away from a consumerist culture. The frightening part is that, as the movie plays, you start to believe that he might actually have a good point. Hirsch does a tremendous job as McCandless, carrying the film for the most part on his own. A lot of time is spent showing what happens to Chris in Alaska, on his own with no human interaction.  He gets you to believe in his ethos and methods and view this plan as not an act of madness or rebellion, but as a choice that all humans should be able to make instead of fitting into the preconceived notions that most of us might be born into. And he’s captivating as hell. Along his journey he meets many different characters, including Catherine Keener as an old hippie, Vince Vaughn as a nice guy who teaches McCandless how to thresh wheat. But the standout of all is Hal Holbrook, who eventually becomes a bit of a surrogate parent in a time when McCandless needs it. Holbrook’s performance is heartbreaking and genuine, and provides a great counter to Hirsch, as he might be the only person to dissuade Chris from his ultimate goal of living alone in Alaska. The film is gorgeously photographed, all on real locations (the bus used in the film is the actual bus that McCandless stayed in for the last leg of his journey. There are some beautiful songs contributed by Eddie Vedder. And the two and half hour running time flies by. It should be noted, though, that the film is utterly depressing at the end. It’s fantastic, and Penn’s best film by a long shot, but man does it ever bum you out. (It’s based on a true story, and you can probably guess what happens in the end if you don’t already, but since it’s been 15 years since the events that transpired, and 11 years since the book the film was based on was published, I feel that nothing is given away.)

Shallow Ground is a film that looks and feels bigger than it really is - for being an Independent Film and what Sheldon Wilson (Director) and his crew was able to do was amazing.. kind of like the “Little Engine that Could,” no matter what was thrown at them, they kept chugging along.

Even though I do applaud the effort of Sheldon and his team - in trying to bring something fresh to a sometimes-repetitive genre, but no matter how much I praise the work that was put into this film and no matter how much I really wanted to love Shallow Ground – it ended up being a film filled with one too many plot holes, as well as  one with poor execution (of certain parts) of the story line.  It ended up to much for me to overcome, so instead of loving this film, I only ended up liking Shallow Ground..

In Shallow Ground: A naked teenage boy covered in blood appears at a remote sheriff’s station one year after the brutal unsolved murder of a local girl. Now sheriff Jack Shepherd, guilt ridden over the girl’s murder must confront his own demons as he desperately searches for the boy’s true identity and possible victims. Little does Jack realize that he had started down a path that will bring him face to face with an unthinkable horror. Before sunrise the living will pay for the pain the dead have suffered…

The overall acting in Shallow Ground was pretty good. What one may think as being a weakness in most independent films - it really was not with this one. Rocky Marquette did an excellent job at playing “The Boy” - for one who have little to no lines, his presence in the film came off the strongest of all the characters. He kept me intrigued and wanting to know more about the mystery surrounding him. Lindsey Stoddart (Deputy Laura Russell) and Stan Kirsch (Deputy Stuart Dempsey) both were also both pretty much solid in the roles (Lindsey, please pin the hair back) and helped keep the movie together. Now the one character I did have a problem with was one of the lead characters Timothy V. Murphy (Sheriff Jack Sheppard). I feel it was more of him being “mis-casted” then his actual acting that turned me off. He was the only one that had an accent (and it was heavy at times) and with the whole story revolving around a small tight-nit town (one in which I pictured you were born there and you die there) he was just out of place. I was never able to overcome the accent and that lead to him being unbelievable and one of the small downfalls to this film.

Outstanding! I cannot express how much I was impressed with the SFX in this film. With what they were able to do with the blood - making it an actual character in the film was amazing. Before seeing this film, I’ve watched the behind the scenes clip (here on this site) about the blood effects and then seeing it on screen - I was still floored. The other make-up and prop effects was “spot-on” too.. from the sliced up faces to the fish hooked wearing corpses - ACE!

For his first major feature film - Sheldon Wilson is on the right track. I’ll be curious to see how he handles other feature films and grow as a director. Shallow Ground is a film whose parts are greater than the whole and there was just to many little things that kept this film from being more than just average. Sheldon weaves a story that is very deeper than one initially thinks.. connecting the dots and taking the viewer along on a surprised filled ride - but it is the execution of some of these plot points is where Sheldon fails to capitalize on, example: The deputy quickly figuring out that certain features from all the missing persons make out the face of “The Boy” - great idea, unbelievable in execution. How the killer ties into everything - great idea, unbelievable in execution (cannot comment more on this.. don’t want to reveal a spoiler), and the “red herring” was really unnecessary (in my point of view).. didn’t add anything to the film. Another problem I had with the film was with some of the pacing. Shallow Ground starts off intense.. very kick ass, only to be slowed down to a crawl - and this uneven pacing is throughout the film - it might tend to frustrate some (it did me).

Chocolat
I saw the director of this film being interviewed on television and my
husband and I went to the Black International Film Festival and to
catch a screening. We laughed and smiled throughout. The premise of a
poor single mom who becomes the nanny for a wealthy Black family in
Martha’s Vineyard was fun and refreshing.

It showed an aspect of African-American life and culture that many
Europeans, as well as Americans, are not terribly aware of, that is the
class conflict within minority communities. It also sweetly preaches
women’s rights and the need for independence. At one point the lead
character says "I don’t need a man to make me happy" and I felt like
standing up and cheering.

the production values are low and there appears to be a lot of locals
used as actors, but there is a tremendous joy amongst the cast as if
they’re all having a great time. There are some slower stretches too,
particularly at the beginning, but the soundtrack is bouncy and fun and
kept me energized throughout.

I’m really glad I caught this movie as was my husband who I dragged
along for the ride.

9/10 stars

Dinosaur
I confess!

I liked this move when I first saw it.

(I was seven in 1955.)

As I recall, an asteroid had passed near the earth and made some stir
in the news before this movie appeared. I suspected that was the
inspiration of the plot.

(OK so THIS plot was NOT inspired in any way, shape or form. Waddaya
gonna do, sue a seven year old kid?)

To a seven year old, an iguana propped up on its hind legs did a
passable impersonation of a tyrannosaurus.

When I saw the movie again on MST3K, well, . . . . hey, I was seven and
it was cool to me in the 1950s.
